description
This captivating Fairyland Lustre vase by Wedgwood is crafted in the rare Candlemas pattern by Daisy Makeig-Jones. Though known for her highly imaginative and fanciful patterns, many of Makeig-Jones’ motifs were based on celebrations and folklore that had existed for generations. The festival of Candlemas traditionally fell on February 1st, and commemorated the end of the Christmas season. The celebration is rendered in exquisite detail on this vase with symbols of the feast.

Introduced by Wedgwood artist Daisy Makeig-Jones in 1915, Fairyland Lustre marked a true departure from the factory's history of classic design and subdued color with its fiery hues and fanciful subjects. Targeting the high-end luxury goods market, they represent one of Wedgwood's most extraordinary technical and artistic achievements in the ceramic industry. The richly colored decorations of Fairyland Luster were extremely popular throughout the 1920s as expensive collector's pieces, and today these works are extremely rare and highly sought after when they come on the market.

Marked with the Wedgwood stamp.
