description
These astounding 17th-century Italian gilt bronzes we once part of the private collection of Gustave de Rothschild, Baron de Rothschild. The stunning figures depict putti carrying the Instruments of the Passion of Jesus Christ. These objects, also known as Arma Christi (Weapons of Christ), comprise the cross, spear, hyssop stick, and pliers that Jesus used as weapons to achieve victory over Satan.

In this incredibly rare grouping, classical putti crafted of meticulously sculpted and cast gilt bronze hold an Instrument standing tall upon columns of gilt bronze and red jasper. The use of red jasper is significant in that many cultures, the stone symbolizes blood, in this instance, the blood and ultimate sacrifice of Jesus.

Undoubtedly commissioned by an individual of generous means, these glorious Renaissance-era objets d'art show signs that they were most likely once part of a tabernacle, of which a similar grouping can be found on the tabernacle of the covenant church of La Purissima in Salamanca, Spain. Figures of St. Paul and St. Peter originating from this same tabernacle, and possessing very similar jasper and gilt bronze bases, are currently in the collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Adding to the importance of these bronzes are their impressive provenance of once residing in the collection of Gustave de Rothschild, of the French line of Rothschilds. Considered the strongest and most influential family in history, the Rothschilds molded the political and economic environment of Europe for over 200 years. Their positions as powerful businessmen could only be rivaled by their positions in society, honored as barons, governors and members of parliament. They were also distinguished as philanthropists, cultural conservationists and art collectors who sought the rarest, most unique works for their private collections, including these exceptional Renaissance bronzes that remained in the Rothschild’s private collection for over a century.
