Circa 1900
This exceptional six-light ceiling fixture by Tiffany Studios embodies the firm’s mastery of both design and craftsmanship. Created circa 1900, the fixture features six iridescent Favrile glass shades suspended from gracefully arched gilt bronze arms. Multi-light hanging fixtures with signed Favrile shades were among the most sophisticated and costly designs produced by Tiffany Studios, often commissioned for grand interiors, private clubs, or the era’s most distinguished residences.
Each shade exhibits the opalescent beauty for which Favrile glass is celebrated, shifting in tone from gold to rose and lilac under changing light. Hand-blown and individually formed, the shades bloom like flower petals, a hallmark of the Art Nouveau movement’s reverence for natural form. The bronze fixture, with its sculptural arms and restrained ornamentation, complements the iridescent glass with warmth and balance.
Louis Comfort Tiffany’s invention of Favrile glass in the 1890s marked a turning point in American decorative arts. By infusing color directly into the molten glass, Tiffany achieved a luminous depth impossible in painted finishes. Multi-light fixtures such as this one demonstrate the workshop’s technical and artistic achievement, uniting innovative glassmaking with superb metalwork. Today, they remain among the most prized expressions of Tiffany Studios’ creative vision.
