Twelve-Light Lily Lamp
Tiffany Studios
1900

This stunning Lily lamp exemplifies the radiant beauty and groundbreaking innovation for which Tiffany Studios was so celebrated. One of the firm's most iconic and intricate designs, a Lily lamp in this grand twelve-light size is an exceptionally rare find.

The twelve golden Favrile glass shades shimmer with Tiffany's signature iridescence, displaying a magnificent array of rose, violet and amber tones. The swirling delicacy of the shades is perfectly complemented by the remarkable sculptural quality of the original bronze Lily Pad base. Together, the Lily lamp is a symphony of fluid forms and radiant color, and it was recognized in its time as a masterpiece of Art Nouveau. It won a grand prize at the International Exposition of Modern Decorative Art in Turin in 1902, and today other examples belong to prestigious museum collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The Lily lamp also unites two of Louis Comfort Tiffany's favorite floral motifs: the pond lily and morning glory. The elongated, trumpet-like shades closely resemble morning glories—flowers Tiffany sketched repeatedly in his watercolor studies done after his favorite Japanese woodblock prints. The Lily Pad base takes inspiration from the aquatic gardens at Tiffany’s Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall, where he cultivated the exotic Latour-Marilac Lily, the world's first colored water lily and the very same flower that inspired Claude Monet's Impressionist canvases. Tiffany’s translation of this botanical splendor into metal and glass represents one of his most lyrical achievements in Art Nouveau design.
