This splendid French First Empire gilt bronze mantel clock features an exquisitely detailed scene of Venus and Cupid sharing a tender moment. Depicting the story of the goddess consoling her son after a bee sting, this tableau is a majestic display of Neoclassical refinement and French First Empire luxury.

Rendered in lifelike resplendence, the elegantly robed Venus extends her arms to the winged cherub who puts a hand to his eye in sadness. In the classical story, Cupid attempts to steal honey from a beehive and gets stung for his efforts, running to his mother for comfort. To teach the young god of desire a lesson, Venus reminds him that his arrows of love—resting just behind the kneeling Cupid in this scene—can be just as painful as a bee sting.

The exquisite craftsmanship of this mantel clock makes it a uniquely grand example of these elaborate timepieces. Resting on a fine specimen of green-veined black marble, the clock is embellished with an array of ormolu classical motifs such as flaming braziers, foliate scrollwork and an additional Venus and Cupid scene on its base. The clock itself is a fully functioning pendulum clock, featuring a white enameled dial signed Mesnil à Paris, an esteemed firm that made many of the timepieces for exceptional Empire mantel clocks such as this one.
