Venus and Cupid

Marble
Inscribed “A. Frilli, Florence, Prof. F. Saul & Bigon” the base.

An enticing nude Venus strikes an unabashedly coy pose in this remarkable marble sculptor by Antonio Frilli. The lissom beauty is gracefully gathering back her flowing hair with one hand, while the other gently rests upon her cheek. Her sinuous contraposto pose accentuates her full feminine curves, heightening the lighthearted beauty of the legendary figure. Her winged infant son Cupid rests on a stone at her feet, clenching a golden arrow and seeking comfort from his mother, while an arrow quiver lies discarded on the ground at the chubby toddler’s feet.

The charming image lends a human element to its mythological subjects, highlighting the tender affection between a mother and her child. Innocent yet sensuous, the beautifully carved group boasts the extraordinary technical accomplishment and neoclassical grace for which Frilli is so loved.

Establishing his private and exclusive atelier in 1860, Florentine sculptor Antonio Frilli enjoyed great success during his lifetime, specializing in marble sculptures for both public commissions and private customers. Both Frilli and his atelier were well known throughout Europe and the United States, and he is known to have exhibited internationally at world’s fair exhibitions in 1876 and 1881, as well as the Espozione Nazionale di Roma in 1883. He worked primarily in marble, but also in bronze and alabaster, producing technically brilliant, decorative sculptures that are neoclassical and contemporary in style. His highly sought after works rarely appear at auction, making this incredible marble a true prize.
