description
Measuring less than three inches wide, this Frères Rochat petit Swiss automaton singing bird box is an astounding 40% smaller than the typical example. The firm is legendary for the meticulous mechanical marvels they created, and of particular to their oeuvre are some of the smallest bird boxes known to exist. This extremely scarce, early singing bird box, or tabatière, embodies the finest and most sought-after aspects of their workmanship.

Immediately, its stunning gold case captures the attention, adorned with elegant applied rocaille accents framing a beautiful enamel plaque of artistic precision. Integrated into the design is the ingeniously inconspicuous winding key that fits neatly into the case's facade. This diminutive model is made even rarer because of its incredible fusée movement, which allows the tiny automaton bird within to move not only its beak but also its head and wings as it chirps his delightful song. The earliest bird boxes were fusée, or chain driven, which meant they played longer and clearer than later models. Rochat boxes, specifically, are renowned for the superior sound quality of their birdsongs, which are considered by bird box authorities to be the absolute finest caliber.

Singing bird boxes such as this example boast some of the most complicated movements of all automata. The singing-bird box was first made in the Swiss city of Geneva just before the close of the 18th century by horologist and automatist Pierre Jaquet-Droz. Once the playthings of the aristocracy, these wonderful boxes continue to delight. Known as a tabatière in France (from the French word for tobacco, for they resemble tobacco or snuff boxes), each box conceals a hand-feathered miniature bird that springs to life when activated. Few boxes, however, boasted the complex movement and minute size as seen in this example, which is composed of hundreds of complicated moving parts within its incredibly small case.
