The inimitable Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) is the subject of this impressive bronze plaque. A man of undeniable strength and resilience, Churchill stands as one of the greatest leaders of the modern world. Capturing the iconic prime minister with a characteristic cigar and paintbrush, this plaque reveals this indomitable man’s little-known passion for art. Churchill’s reputation as a politician and statesman often overshadows the tremendous talent he possessed for painting. A true Renaissance man, Churchill pursued the art of painting for more than 40 years, and the present piece offers a glimpse into this personal side of the historic giant.

The painting was a dominating passion for Churchill in the last half of his life. There is little evidence that he had any artistic training prior to his 40s. In fact, his wife Clementine mentioned at one point that before he began painting, Churchill had hardly visited an art museum, much less created art. Churchill first began painting following a personal and political disaster, the Dardanelles campaign, in 1915. He is quoted as telling the painter Sir John Rothenstein: “If it weren’t for painting, I couldn’t live; I couldn’t bear the strain of things.”

As prime minister of the United Kingdom, Churchill presided over one of the most turbulent periods in British history. The pugnacious statesman led Great Britain to victory during World War II, while his now-legendary speeches inspired the country during her darkest hours. The only British Prime Minister to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, Churchill was an author and historian, as well as a painter. This remarkably rare bronze skillfully captures Churchill as he is rarely seen - at a moment of leisure at the easel in his private life.
