description
This cane pays tribute to the fascinating study of phrenology, in which practitioners would "read" the bumps on the head to determine an individual's personality traits. Its porcelain handle is crafted in the form of a head, which has various regions outlined and numbered. Set upon a malacca shaft, the handle also features a key listing all of the numbered areas.

Victorians were particularly fascinated by phrenology. The tenets of this questionable science were first set down by Viennese physician Franz Joseph Gall, who hypothesized that different faculties of the mind were housed in distinct portions of the brain and that development in each area would be reflected in the shape of the skull. This hypothesis was eagerly adopted in Europe and in America, and was particularly welcome during a time when discoveries by Charles Darwin and the discovery of geological time shook the foundations of traditional scientific beliefs. Societies dedicated to the study of phrenology began to spring up in 1820, and those who fancied themselves practitioners often carried the phrenologist's cane as an outward symbol of their authority.
