description
This rare and impressive export silver cake basket, with graceful, delicate lines and intricate engraving, was crafted by the celebrated Chinese silversmith Wang Hing. The firm of Wang Hing & Co. began as an important retailer of jade pieces in Canton, quickly rising to become the best-known and most prolific firm of the period. In the late 19th century, Wang Hing was exhibiting silver pieces at international exhibitions, and eventually expanded to Shanghai and Hong Kong in the early 20th century. Today, Wang Hing & Co. silver pieces remain highly sought after by collectors of important silver.

Decorated on its stylized base with a lovely carved bamboo motif, this rare cake basket is an attractive mix of Oriental motifs and Western form. The double knot in the center of the swing handle, exquisitely formed with entwining dragonheads, indicates the charming basket was likely intended as a marriage gift. The bowl features the mark of Wang Hing on the reverse.
