description
This highly popular Peony pattern adorns this exceptional library lamp by Tiffany Studios. Sometimes referred to as the "glory of the garden," the peony inspired a number of shades by Tiffany. A few varieties of the Peony pattern were executed in Tiffany's 18-inch shades; this example, however, boasts a much larger 22-inch diameter and a unique curvature. An array of large blossoms are distributed around the shade in varying hues of white, pink and red, beautifully mimicking the natural color of these lovely flowers. Their stems are a mottled yellowish-green, while their foliage take on a bluish-green tint that provides lovely contrasts to the pinks of the petals.

The shade is set upon its original bronze Tiffany library base. Similar to the shade, the base takes its inspiration from nature, incorporating a stem-and-leaf motif that extends from the outer edge of the platform upwards along the center, lending it a fluted effect. As functional as it is beautiful, the base is fully adjustable and capable of extending upwards to 35 inches in height, making it one of Tiffany's tallest table bases.

Tiffany lamps are one of the great icons of the American decorative arts, representing Louis Comfort Tiffany's seemingly limitless creativity and endless quest for beauty. Though he worked in a number of media throughout his life, glass was always the material that fascinated him the most, and his glass creations are undoubtedly his masterpieces. This Peony lamp is among the most vibrant and colorful examples of his coveted designs.

A similar shade is pictured in The Lamps of Tiffany, 1970, by E. Neustadt.
