    1868-1914 • British

    Signed and dated 1902
    Oil on canvas

Three adorable terriers huddle close in this charming portrait, entitled The New Litter, by British artist Valentine Thomas Garland. The son of artist Henry Garland of Winchester, the younger Garland gained great success as a painter of animal and genre subjects, working in both oil and watercolor. His canvases showcase not only the artist's technical skill but also his ability to express the tenderness and loyalty of man's best friend. He exhibited many works at the Royal Academy between 1868 and 1914, as well as at the Suffolk Street Galleries and at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors.
