Sunset on the Plains

Signed "Muller" (lower left); inscribed "Beauvoir, MI" (en verso)
Oil on canvas

This exceptional oil on canvas was almost certainly once owned by the former President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis. It likely hung on the walls of his famed historic post-war home Beauvoir in Biloxi, Mississippi, which was specially constructed for Davis in 1848. The romantic vision of the American landscape would have been right at home on the historic estate, whose very name means "beautiful to view."

In this stunning scene, the last few moments of sunlight illuminate the Western plains with warmth and brilliance. The canvas seemingly glows as the sun's rays are reflected off the water with a golden red hue, while the vast and vivid sky glistens like a jewel. Shadowy silhouettes of native Americans occupy the right corner of the canvas, seemingly at one with the sky and land that surrounds them. Overall, the work reflects the artist's mastery over color and atmosphere, presenting the perfect sunset scene.

Romanticized images of native Americans and the American West became widely popular in both America and abroad during the mid-19th century. Paying tribute to the American frontier, the present work is a spectacular example of the genre.
