FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can M.S. Rau tell me what my item is worth?
Unfortunately, M.S. Rau is not able to offer opinions of value.  If you would like to have your items appraised, we encourage you to find an accredited appraiser in your area through the American Society of Appraisers at www.appraisers.org. Or, contact your local Chamber of Commerce for a referral.

Can M.S. Rau give me more information on my item?
Given our broad inventory, M.S. Rau is only able to research the items within our collection. To learn more about your item, we recommend hiring an appraiser to research it. An appraiser will inform you about your item and its value.

Would M.S. Rau be interested in purchasing my items?
M.S. Rau strives to offer museum-quality works of fine art and antiques. Our antiques and works of art demonstrate exceptional quality and condition, and often have a noted maker or possess an important provenance.

  • Prints or reproductions of any kind including lithographs, prints or posters even when signed by the artist

  • Single pieces of flatware, dinnerware or stemware (unless they have an important provenance or maker such as Paul Revere or Paul Storr)

  • Late 19th- or 20th-century silverplate unless accompanied by a significant provenance or noted maker

M.S. Rau does not typically purchase the following:

  • Mechanical objects (music boxes, clocks, automatons) that are not working, unless the repair is minor

  • Vehicles

  • Vintage toys or dolls

  • Vintage newspapers and magazines

  • Household items such as glass bottles, appliances (including typewriters and sewing machines)

M.S. Rau typically seeks the following:

Original Artworks by Important Artists
We are generally looking for important, original paintings by noted artists in excellent condition and with traceable provenance. Take a look at our fine art collection for examples. We cannot identify paintings if you do not know the artist.

Estate Jewelry
Our inventory is comprised of rare stones of significant quality, often accompanied by gemology lab certification. We also are interested in signed pieces by important jewelry houses, or those with a documented provenance that have been owned by a noteworthy historical figure or celebrity. Take a look at our jewelry collection for examples.

Fine Furniture
We strive to acquire furniture by noted furniture makers and prefer pieces that are signed or that have a documented historical significance, such as a dresser by Thomas Chippendale, a desk made for and used by Napoleon, and Tsar Nicholas II's armoire.
