Displaying grand size and innovative artistry is this original pair of Japonesque salamander vases attributed to Parisian glass artist Auguste Jean. Rarities in Jean's oeuvre, these fascinating vases measure over a foot in height and are perfect illustrations of the exuberant beauty of his art glass creations. Each vase features a beautifully detailed salamander coiling around the square forms, which are composed of brilliant turquoise glass with emerald green glass that appears to "melt" over the rims. The salamanders rest amongst a menagerie of exotic birds, insects, sea turtles and flowers that are executed in dazzling gilt and opaque polychrome, and each vase rests upon bulbous emerald green glass feet. Vibrant, striking and one-of-a-kind, these incredible vases are exceptional examples of Jean's highly sought-after glass masterpieces.

The unparalleled beauty of Auguste Jean's glass creations first became world-known at the Paris Exhibition Universelle of 1878 where his display earned him the bronze medal. Originally a ceramicist like his father, Jean later delved into the glass arts after establishing his own studio around 1860. There, he was constantly testing and devising new techniques of working with ceramics that he employed in his glass creations. These inventions eventually led to the filing of several patents, and many of Jean's findings continue to inspire and be utilized by glass artisans today.

A pair of vases by Auguste Jean can be found in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
