description
This handsome pair of Regency hall chairs is an exceptional example of the Sheraton style of furniture in both construction and composition. Crafted of rich mahogany, the chairs each boast the sleek, elegant lines and precise craftsmanship prevalent in Thomas Sheraton's groundbreaking designs. One of the top three English furniture designers of the 18th century along with George Hepplewhite and Thomas Chippendale, Sheraton offered his own individual interpretation of the Neoclassical style based on geometric principles and functional beauty. His influence is beautifully interpreted in these richly-carved Regency hall chairs.

As the name indicates, such chairs were generally placed in grand entrances of country homes and manors, and they were crafted to make an impression. These examples are each adorned by stunning eagle head carved cresting above an openwork urn back, revealing the Neoclassical influence that pervaded furniture styles of the Late Georgian and Regency eras. Exhibiting high-caliber craftsmanship and an impressive design, they illustrate the highest level of English cabinetry.

A similar design is illustrated in Thomas Sheraton's celebrated Cabinet Dictionary, 1803, plate 31.
