Prince’s Love Symbol Necklace

This one-of-a-kind pendant was once owned by the great pop culture icon Prince. Taking the form of Prince's iconic "Love Symbol," the 14K white gold necklace was worn by Prince on stage during his concert performances in the mid- to late 1990s. The musician catapulted from star to legend when he adopted the unpronounceable glyph as his stage name in 1993, partially in defiance of his record label, Warner Bros. A blend of the ancient symbols of man and woman, it has since come to represent not only the artist's fluid sexuality, but also the triumph of harmony over conflict.

After he adopted the "Love Symbol," the press took to calling him "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince," while magazines were forced to install a special typeface just to write about the musician. It remains one of the boldest career moves of rock n' roll history. Though he readopted the name "Prince" in 2000 after his contract with Warner Bros. expired, the symbol remained an important part of the musician's identity, and he continued to used the motif on his albums, in his home and in his jewelry pieces such as this.
