    description
Henry Carey, first Lord Hunsdon, governor of Berwick and chamberlain of Queen Elizabeth's household, is depicted here with an extraordinary level of detail by the celebrated miniaturist Henry Bone. The son of Mary Boleyn, the sister of Anne Boleyn, Carey was a cousin of Elizabeth I and, many believe, the illegitimate child of Henry VIII. Bone depicts Carey draped with the medal of the Order of the Garter over a richly painted black velvet shawl, distinguishing him as a many of stature and status.

Known as the “Prince of Enamellers”, Henry Bone was born in Cornwall in 1755 to a cabinet maker and carver. After distinguishing himself as an enamellist and historical copyist, Bone was appointed enamel painter to the Prince of Wales in 1801 and thereafter to King George III, King George IV and King William IV. Renowned for his remarkable eye for detail and the vivid colors of his enamels, Bone’s miniature masterpieces remain highly collectible today.
