    description
Boasting a remarkable level of detail, this rare miniature portrait depicts British Governor John Bance, Director of the Bank of England and one of the most important merchants of his day. The enamel miniature, painted by renowned miniaturist Christian Friedrich Zincke and measuring just 4 inches high, beautifully captures the Governor down to the smallest detail. From his delicate white lace cravat to the full curls of his white wig, this extraordinary work is a testament to the level of skill of the artist.

Painted on copper, the rare miniature boasts brilliant colors and an extraordinary luminosity, remaining in impeccable condition for its age. The piece is set in its original gold case, which features a repoussé coat of arms on the reverse.

Born in Dresden in 1684, Christian Friedrich Zincke was the son of a goldsmith, and he briefly trained as the same until he turned in portrait painting. After distinguishing himself as a remarkable talent in the workshop of portrait painter Heinrich-Christoph Fehling, he moved to England in 1706 on the invitation of the Swedish enamellist Charles Boit. His work as a miniaturist soon caught the attention of the royals, and he quickly earned himself a reputation as one of the leading enamellists in England. He frequently earned royal commissions, serving Queen Anne, George I, and George II. In 1732, Zincke was appointed Cabinet Painter to Frederick, Prince of Wales. Today, miniatures by Zincke can also be found in the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Galleries of Scotland, among others.
