description
Shimmering mother-of-pearl envelopes this outstanding watch holder and inkwell. The magnificently detailed, pierced screen secures a timepiece and diminutive mirror, while the base holds the removable inkpots and watch-holder mountings. Doré bronze accents provide beautiful contrast to the luxurious mother-of-pearl. Surely, this exceptional accessory would have been at home in the most prestigious shopping districts in Europe.

Since the reign of Louis XIV, the Palais Royal shopping district has been a rich and amazing part of Parisian life. Located in a palace and garden north of the Louvre, it was originally the home of Cardinal Richelieu, and under Louis Philippe II, it was redesigned and open to the public as one of the premiere early "shopping centers" in Europe. Famous for its upscale merchandise and wide variety of products available, it was one of the most important marketplaces in Europe. In addition to featuring a thriving theatre and world-class dining, the old palace held as many as 145 shops, including boutiques, cafés, hair salons, bookshops and museums. For royalty, courtiers and wealthy world-travelers, it was the epitome of luxury.
