This French ormolu and cut glass table garniture by the famed Baccart displays the exceptional workmanship for which this legendary firm is renowned. The garniture comprises five pieces: a surtout de table, two candlesticks and two tazze. From the meticulously hand-cut and etched crystal bowl to the lavish ormolu cherubs, candle arms and scroll flourishes, this rare garniture is in a class of its own.

Surtout de table is a term used to describe an exceptionally ornate dining table centerpiece. Originating sometime in the 18th century, these extravagant dining accessories were crafted of the most luxurious materials of the day and demonstrated the superiority of an artist's skill. Its use is closely related to the epergne, as it was used to hold floral arrangements, candles, condiments and fine dragées, such as candied almonds and chocolates.

Established by the Royal Decree of Louis XV in 1765, Baccarat has consistently produced glass and crystal works such as these that have revolutionized and dazzled the industry. From the beginning, the company received numerous royal commissions from French nobility and aristocrats across Europe, most notably Tsar Nicolas of Russia, Louis XV, Louis XVI and Napoleon. They won their first gold medal at the 1855 Exposition Universelle and have continued to earn prizes at international exhibitions since. Today, antique works by this prestigious company are exceedingly rare, especially magnificent examples such as this.
