description
Two birds are perched atop this exceptional Napoleon III-period carved giltwood mirror. The bold neoclassical elements of the elaborately carved double frame exemplify the style of the Second Empire, with symmetrical garlands and acanthus decorations, all anchored by the birds at the crest and mirrored panels surrounding the beveled center.

The style of the Napoleon III era was marked by its grandness. A profusion of luxurious materials was used to craft works that beautifully combined the French Rococo and neoclassical styles. The patronage of the Empress Eugénie herself resulted in a wealth of décor inspired by Louis XVI's bride, Marie-Antoinette. This atmosphere of luxury produced an eclectic and inventive re-interpretation of 17th- and 18th-century styles that have been admired ever since. Crafted with the greatest attention to detail, this mirror is a prime example of this magnificent and peerless period.
