description
Meticulously hand painted, this exceptionally rare miniature watercolor portrait captures the first president of the United States, George Washington. Such depictions were remarkably popular both during Washington's lifetime and after, when the president's iconic persona permeated American culture post-Revolution. Depictions such as this of Washington as General found particular favor - his image in uniform came to symbolize the military victories of the United States, as well as the country's liberty and unity.

Though he began his life in America as a farmer, Washington joined the military at the age of 20, and he quickly rose through the ranks thanks to his natural skills as a leader. By the time of the Revolutionary War in 1775, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. His success in the role led the Electoral College to unanimously elect him president during the first two national elections.

Perhaps the most famous portrait of Washington was painted by the famed American portraitist Gilbert Stuart, which is currently held in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery (Washington D.C.). Known as the Athenaeum portrait, the work was widely copied in both full size and miniature form. The head of the president in the present portrait is almost certainly based on Stuart's original - it is the same likeness that appears on the American one dollar bill. Yet, our artist depicts Washington in his general's uniform, appealing to the patriotism and solidarity of the nation.
