description
This beautiful and important pair of cranberry glass vases feature the timeless childhood silhouettes known as Mary Gregory. The motifs are executed in white enameling of varying thickness to give the images amazing depth. This elegant pair is a significant find since it is quite rare to find an original pairing of Mary Gregory wears exhibiting such grand size and superior craftsmanship.

Mary Gregory glass is known best for its stylized white enamel painting usually depicting Victorian children at play in gardens and various outdoor scenes. The trees and foliage often have a typical "feathered" style with the children demonstrating oddly old-fashioned proportions. It was once thought that the term Mary Gregory was derived from the name of the decorator responsible for their conception; however, evidence of old catalogs from Bohemian and German glassworks show these designs well before 1880. Although a "Mary Gregory" was employed by the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company in the late 1800s, Mary Gregory wares were never created by that company.
