The personal effects of First Lady Martha Washington, including beautiful mother-of-pearl and gold earrings, and a mourning jewelry locket containing the hair of her husband, President George Washington, give a rare insight into the private lives of our nation’s first First Couple. Taken from the famed Mount Vernon estate, the earrings are crafted in an elegant pierced shield design with gold hoops, while the gold heart-shaped locket features a glass window through which Washington’s hair is clearly visible. Mounted against cornflower blue velvet, these items are framed with portraits of President and Mrs. Washington and beautifully labeled. Artifacts from the Founding Fathers, and Mothers, of the United States are endowed with an undeniable, intrinsic importance, and are rarely, if ever, found outside of museums and private collections. Those belonging to the revered first president and his family are especially prized.
