description
Some of the world's most amazing butterfly species are on display in this beautiful mahogany collector's cabinet. The cabinet's drawers contain hundreds of butterflies and moths, with close-fitting glass tops to insulate from damaging dust and mites. Each drawer can also be removed, making them perfect for individual display. All are housed in a wonderfully constructed case, with double doors that feature brightly colored marquetry butterflies in the Art Nouveau style.

Circa 1890

53" high x 33 1/4" wide x 20 1/4" deep

Naturalists have collected butterflies for over 300 years with the earliest surviving specimens dating from the late 17th century, the beginning of the Scientific Revolution. Butterfly collections were a result of an ever-growing interest in natural history and many were displayed in curio cabinets throughout the town houses and country mansions of Britain's wealthy society. King George III, Winston Churchill, Neville Chamberlain and poet Thomas Grey all participated in the pursuit of entomology.
