description
Created with the avid traveler in mind, this explorer's pocket watch by the London firm of Lund & Blockley is encased in elegant sterling silver. With its protective crown cover and screw-down back and bezel, this handsome timepiece was designed to be resistant to dirt and moisture. The gilded three-quarter plate movement is masterfully executed, featuring a lever escapement, bi-metallic compensation balance, diamond endstone, fuseé and chain. This exceptional watch tells time on a white enamel dial with blued steel spade hands and Roman numerals. Auxiliary dials for seconds and an "up-and-down" indication for the state of wind make this the perfect companion for the intrepid adventurer.

Sold by Lund & Blockley from the late 1870s until 1925, the specialized case of these precision watches attracted the attention of the Royal Geographical Society, which purchased approximately 28 of them to lend to their members, specifically for African and Polar expeditions. A similar watch was once part of the Time Museum collection.

This watch comes complete with its wooden hinged deck box with viewing lid, lock and key. The movement is signed To The Queen / Lund & Blockley, 42 Pall Mall, London and numbered "2/1089." The case is hallmarked London, 1884 with the makers mark for Philip Woodman.
