description
This exceptional pair of French Louis XVI-style marble and bronze candelabra exhibit the timeless neoclassical style of the late 18th century. The classical boldness and elegance of this aesthetic period is clearly evident in these monumental pieces, where patinated bronze is paired with ormolu and marble to dramatic effect. These absolutely extraordinary five-light candelabra feature the charming figures of young kneeling cherubs seated on a reeded column, each holding aloft a decorative pillar from which issue the classically adorned arms of the fixture. Elevated on a marble base with charming ormolu feet, these exceptional lights beautifully express the exuberance of the Louis XVI period with outstanding artistry.

Following the exuberant and grandiose style of the Rococo period, Neoclassicism emerged in the late 18th century as a return to more classic aesthetic ideals. This style looked toward the classical world of Greek and Roman architecture for inspiration, with an emphasis on straight lines and symmetry. Metalwork forms such as this pair were often adorned with decorations associated with classical architecture, including columns, acanthus leaves, fluting, and gadrooning. Pieces that boast this classical influence remain at the height of style and luxury, and outstanding pieces like these candelabra, especially in a pair, are extremely rare.
