The classical grandeur of the Louis XV style is on full display in these magnificent French urns. Carved from vivacious Italian brêche violette marble in the iconic krater form, these urns display a bold Greco-Roman influence. The majestic handles are sculpted from bronze Ormolu and feature an animated depiction of mythological gorgon Medusa’s grimacing face and serpentine hair. Displaying a superb degree of artistry, this incredible pair of twin urns exemplifies the Louis XV style.

A revival of the Louis XV style emerged in France during the mid-19th century, a time known as the Second Empire. Harkening to the influence of Emperor Napoleon III, who sought to cement his place in French history as being associated with the splendor of Imperial Rome, the decorative style is distinguished by a vast melange of styles recalling ancient history. Eclecticism reigned as craftspeople revisited the most opulent styles from centuries past resulting in their own elaborate versions. Artisans were inspired by the Renaissance and Baroque period, as well as Rococo and Neoclassic Louis XVI designs. Inspiration also came from the near and far East, as the treasures of China, Japan and Constantinople made their way to Europe.
