Les Moissonneurs de Proussy
(Harvesters of Placy)

Signed “H. Claude Pissarro” (lower left)
Oil on canvas

This extraordinary oil on canvas is a painterly tour de force by the French painter H. Claude Pissarro. The influence of his grandfather, the legendary Impressionist Camille Pissarro, is keenly felt in his vibrant palette and distinctive style. This work, which captures three harvesters in Placy in the Normandy countryside, is imbued with the colorful hues, rich textures and light-filled brilliance that exemplifies Pissarro's artistic virtuosity. Through his renowned eye for composition, the ambiance of the tranquil scene is captured in each and every brushstroke.

Multi-hued trees and fields fill the canvas, as Pissarro finds color in the most unexpected of places. He follows a rich impressionist tradition in the work, not only in its style but also its subject. Since the mid-19th century, the peasantry and labor prevailed as a favored subject among the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist greats. Through his careful rendering of the laboring women, Pissarro is successful at presenting a nostalgic image of rural life. Pissarro sacrifices detail in favor of atmosphere, an aesthetic effect that evokes an emotional response to this French artist's romanticized vision.

Raised in a prolific artistic environment, Pissarro was an avid student of both his father, French painter Paul-Emile Pissarro, and his grandfather, Camille. He exhibited his first works at the young age of 14 and later studied in Paris at the École du Musée du Louvre and École Normale Supérieur. Like many of his family predecessors, the scope of his work and talent is vast, ranging from engraving to lithography and publishing to painting. His reputation as an artist led to a White House commission in 1959 to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored works such as the present piece.

The painting is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
