description
Exceptional craftsmanship and highly sophisticated decoration makes Minton’s pâte-sur-pâte porcelain plaques second to none. This Minton plaque features a brilliantly hued peacock-blue background by porcelain master Louis Solon, who is widely considered to be the greatest artist to work in this style and technique. Decorated in white slip, the plaque features a kneeling maiden with a shield defending herself against six putti-like Cupids wielding a battering ram. This exceptional plaque serves as a shining example of the Neoclassical style that dominated English porcelain during the late 19th century.

Marc-Louis Solon was a renowned French porcelain artist who rose to prominence as a designer for the famed Sèvres manufactory in France. It was here in the 1850s where Solon perfected the pâte-sur-pâte technique first employed by 18th-century Chinese artisans. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, he emigrated to Stoke-on-Trent in England where he became one of the principal artists at the Minton ceramics factory. Other examples of Solon’s designs for Minton can be found at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).
