La Rue de Falaise à Trun
(Falaise Street in Trun)

Signed “H. Claude Pissarro” (lower right)
Pastel on card

French artist Hugues Claude Pissarro offers a view of the quaint village of Trun in this exceptional pastel painting. The sun-bathed street is lined by the colorful facades of shop fronts, while the street is alive with the clamor of a busy pedestrian thoroughfare. Bustling with activity and historic charm, the composition is brought to life by Pissarro’s breathtaking palette and impressionistic brushwork.

The legacy of the Pissarro family - now in its fourth generation - is among the most long-lasting and impactful in the history of art. Apart from its famed progenitor, Camille, H. Claude is perhaps the most highly lauded member of this artistic clan, each of whom has carried on the family's impressionistic tradition. This colorful pastel exemplifies the vibrantly hued, impressionistic views that dominate his oeuvre. Rich with swift brushstrokes of vivid color, it clearly displays his impressionist roots.

Hailing from a long lineage of painters, Pissarro's artistic talents were cultivated at an early age. He exhibited his first works at the young age of 14, and later studied in Paris at the École du Louvre and École Normale Supérieure. A 1959 White House commission to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower cemented his reputation as an artist of renown, and his work has since been featured in important exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored works such as the present piece, which are highly collected.

The painting is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
