La Plage, Dieppe

Signed and titled “F. Gall / Dieppe” (lower right)
Oil on canvas

Beautifully composed and imbued with light, this remarkable oil on canvas is the work of Hungarian painter François Gall. Entitled La Plage, Dieppe, this magnificent seascape is among his finest, and clearly, reveals the influence of the great French painter Eugène Boudin on the young painter. Under a tranquil, cloudy sky that recalls the finest of Boudin's canvases, Gall captures the atmosphere of everyday life along the northern coast of France with reverence and affection.

Born in Kolozsvar, Hungary (modern-day Transylvania, Romania), Gall began his artistic training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. In the 1940s, he firmly established himself in Paris as a painter of renown in the Impressionist tradition, and his style was particularly indebted to Eugène Boudin and the early work of Claude Monet. He was honored in 1963 as a recipient of the Francis Smith Prize and enjoyed remarkable success during his lifetime.
