description
A superlative example of the Art Nouveau aesthetic, this incredible jeweled gold and enamel pendant was created by French goldsmith, jeweler and sculptor Jules Brateau (1844-1923). The piece centers around the stunning figure of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, fertility and motherhood. The goddess is surrounded by flowers and swirling stems while a pair of cupids gaze upon her in reverence. Suspended from this pendant are faceted amethysts and a sapphire drop, adding a touch of color to this silver and gold masterpiece of jewelry design.

Jules Brateau was France's leading jewelry designer in the late 19th- through early 20th centuries. A highly-skilled artisan, Brateau specialized in jewelry and jeweled objets d'art working for some of Paris' most prominent retailers, including Boucheron. His works garnered the artist much acclaim, earning him membership to the Légion d'honneur in 1894 and an appointment as a juror at the Universal Exposition of 1900.
