La Gardienne de Moutons
 (The Keeper of the Sheep)
after Henry Lerolle's Dans la Campagne

Signed "Dubé JPs H. Lerolle Paris 1897" (lower left)
Oil on canvas

A tranquil pastoral scene of a shepherdess and her flock is the subject of this remarkable oil on canvas entitled La Gardienne de Moutons (The Keeper of Sheep). The extraordinary scene was composed by the French painter Louis-Théodore Dubé after an important work by the great Henry Lerolle, which is now housed at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Renowned for his independent outlook and working outside the en vogue, Lerolle composed elegant, realistic canvases that depicted scenes of everyday activity during the height of Impressionism. Dubé perfectly captures the idyllic atmosphere of Lerolle's outstanding works, while imbuing the scene with a luminosity and brilliance that is all his own.

A Canadian-born Frenchman, Dubé enjoyed a successful career as a painter of genre scenes, frequently painting canvasses after both the great masters and the contemporaries he admired most. He was also an important portraitist in his own right, including a monumental life-sized portrait of President Woodrow Wilson in 1912.
