Oil on canvas

The glamorous figure of Isabella Rossellini is the subject of this dramatic and sensuous oil on canvas. The famed Italian actress is the daughter of two Hollywood legends — the Oscar-winning actress Ingrid Bergman and the Italian director Roberto Rossellini. This impressive oil captures her in the 1980s at the height of her modeling career, perfectly representing the grace and beauty of this cultural icon.

Born in Rome, Italy, in 1952, Rossellini eventually made a home for herself in the United States and holds dual Italian and American citizenship. Born into Hollywood royalty, it is little wonder that she pursued a career in the spotlight. Rossellini began her career as a model, eventually earning a place as the face of Lancôme from 1982 until 1996. She made her movie debut in Vincente Minnelli's A Matter of Time (1976), which starred her mother and Liza Minnelli. Her first significant role was the 1979 film Il Prato, after which she worked as an American correspondent for the Italian television network RAI.

In 1986, she landed her most memorable role to date, as the lounge singer in David Lynch's masterpiece Blue Velvet. She would go on to win numerous awards, including an Independent Spirit Award and a Saturn Award, and has been nominated for both a Golden Globe and Emmy Award. Today, she is again the face of Lancôme, starring in their latest campaign that celebrates her timeless beauty and unequalled elegance. Featured in innumerable campaigns throughout her successful career, her face is one of the most recognizable of her generation. Further cementing her legacy, her portrait by Terry O'Neill now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery (London); it was captured during the same period as the present oil on canvas.
