In Charlottenlund Forest

Signed “P Mönsted. 1908” (lower right)
Oil on canvas

Celebrated as the greatest Danish landscape artist of his time, Peder Mork Mønsted's masterful understanding of topography is evident in this serene painting, In Charlottenlund Forest. He masterfully captured the famed forest in the winter time, blanketed in pure white, freshly fallen snow. The tranquil scene combines the artist’s attention to detail with his almost impressionistic sensitivity to light. The play of light across the surface of snow is achieved through the seemingly infinite shades of white the bring the canvas to life.

Part of the famed gardens of Charlottenlund Palace, once the summer residence of the Danish royal family, the picturesque Charlottenlund Forest is blanketed with old beech and oak trees and small lawns, connected by natural paths such as the one seen here. Mønsted captures a seemingly secluded area deep in the forest, rendered with his characteristic saturated palette and sharp attention to detail. He includes the tracks of a sled and a lone cabin in the distance as the only hints to man's presence in this luminous wintery wonderland.

Mønsted was born in 1859 in the eastern Denmark town of Balle. He began his artistic studies at an early age at the Prince Ferdinand's Drawing School in Aarhus, where he worked under the tutelage of the great landscape painter Andries Fritz. In 1875, he continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Art. It was there he fell under the influence of artists such as Christen Kobke and Pieter Christian Skorgaard - their devotion to color and the romanticism of the Danish landscape would prove remarkably influential on the young painter.

After completing his studied, Mønsted travelled extensively and often to Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Italy, North Africa and the Mediterranean. However, the Danish landscape and coastline would remain his favored subjects, and today they are considered to be his most captivating. His compositions reflect a romantic and highly poetic view of nature, which he ingeniously translated into some of the grandest landscapes of his generation.
