description
This monumental German silver-mounted flask is an extraordinary specimen of cranberry glass. Exhibiting a deep crimson hue, cranberry glass dates to the late Roman Empire, though it was not until the 17th century that the art form was rediscovered. Adding a touch of gold to a batch of molten glass before firing results in this dramatic color. Due to the high cost of gold, such creations are exceptionally rare and were particularly sought after during the height of the Victorian age. To find a large example such as this is truly outstanding. The flask is beautifully presented in its Neoclassical silver mounting.
