description
The workmanship displayed in this French ormolu and cut glass table garniture denotes its creation by the most skilled craftsmen. The garniture comprises five pieces: a surtout de table, two candlesticks and two tazze. From the meticulously hand-cut and etched crystal bowl, to the lavish ormolu cherubs, candle arms and scroll flourishes, this garniture is unique and in a class of its own.

The surtout de table is a term used to describe an exceptionally ornate dining table centerpiece. Originating sometime in the 18th century, these extravagant dining accessories were crafted of the most luxurious materials of the day and demonstrated the superiority of an artist's skill. Its use is closely related to the epergne, as it was used to elegantly hold floral arrangements, candles, condiments and fine dragées, such as candied almonds and chocolates.

Second half, 19th century
