description
This exceptional French Empire-style mantel clock was created after a model by the famed French sculptor Claude Michallon. The gilt and patinated bronze design captures one of the most legendary love stories in history — the mythological tale of Cupid and Psyche. The clock tells the time on a gilt dial with Roman numerals, while the movement strikes on the hour and half hour. The famous lovers flank the gilt bronze and rouge marble timepiece, which is further adorned by neoclassical mounts in the Empire style.

When Napoléon became Emperor in 1804, a new period in the decorative arts was ushered in to legitimize his reign and create the illusion of permanence and power. The new Empire style was informed by the classical vocabulary of the great ancient empires. While the Greeks and Romans had long influenced architects and artisans throughout Europe by the time Napoléon came to rule, he was able to use symbols from antiquity in a way that would promote his Empire and link the regime to powerful cultures of the past. The classical motif of Cupid and Psyche was a particular favorite of the Empress Joséphine, who famously commissioned a marble of the duo from the famed Italian sculptor Antonio Canova.
