Family Portrait

Signed and dated "Mouat Loudan 1903" (lower right)
Oil on canvas

This monumental family portrait reveals the society portrait painter William Mouat Loudan's mastery over composition and style. Though classically composed, this family grouping of an aristocratic woman with her three children boasts a more casual atmosphere that places it firmly within the realm of modern 20th-century portraiture. Loudan excelled at this type of society portrait, and this monumental example embodies the very best qualities of his output.

The superb portrait reveals the influence of photography on the artist; rather than the rigid air of classical portraiture, the work captures the family in a more casual pose. Through his intimate composition, Loudan appears to have captured a private moment with the family. The young child, clearly full of energy, is held still by her mother, while the eldest child leans casually against the sofa to the side. The most engaging figure is that of the middle child, who turns towards his mother with a degree of animation that feels wholly realistic and unrehearsed. With its rich red drapery, the setting itself remains traditional, but Loudan's subjects are far more human, imbuing the scene with a distinctive modernity.

Born in London in 1868, William Mouat Loudan was educated at Dulwich College before attending the Royal Academy Schools in London. At the Academy Schools, he won the prestigious gold medal and a traveling scholarship, which allowed him to travel to Paris to study under the celebrated Academic painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau. After returning to London, Loudan began exhibiting first at the Royal Academy in 1880, and eventually at innumerable other exhibitions, including the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, and the New English Art Club. He became a member of the New English Art Club in 1886 and a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1891. Today, his works can be found in galleries throughout England, including the Leeds Art Gallery, the Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool), and the Guildhall Art Gallery (London).
