Famille de Chats
(Cat Family)
Signed ‘J.LeRoy’ (lower right)
Oil on board
This delightful and extremely rare collection of five works was composed by Jules LeRoy, an artist admired for his candid portraits of cats and kittens. Such paintings of animals and family pets were remarkably popular at the end of the 19th century, and LeRoy possessed a particular talent for capturing the unique personalities of his subjects. Set in its original lavish rococo frame, this cat family is an exceptional example of LeRoy’s distinctive style.
LeRoy was highly popular for his paintings of cats in charming, and sometimes mischevious, poses. Little is known about the life of the artist, though he is believed to be the son of Jules LeRoy Sr., a famous painter of fruits, flowers, and occassionally felines.
