description
This whimsical Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre bowl designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones displays the fantastical Poplar Trees pattern, the very first pattern produced under the title of Fairyland. The exterior of the bowl offers a breathtaking night vista of a park with cypresses, statues and a fountain. The distant views have touches of red, orange, purple and blue, and the ground and sky are beautifully illuminated with golden swirls.

The interior is equally fascinating. Adorned in the Elves and Bell Branch pattern, it features elves and fairies that have been taken prisoner by a spider. The intricate web and graceful figures are depicted against an iridescent mother-of-pearl background. Its luster is achieved thanks to a delicate film of metal or metallic oxide, which is deposited on an already-fired glazed surface.

Inventive designs such as these executed in bold color are the signature of Makeig-Jones’ whimsical works. Today, pieces from the Fairyland line are extremely rare and highly sought out by collectors.
