description
This exceptionally rare Fair Weigh Golf Scale by the Colonial Scale Company is designed to tell a person's weight with the drop of a penny. The innovative model is largely considered one of the greatest novelty scales ever produced, as it incorporates an arcade machine within the scale. It is one of only three of its kind known to still exist, making it an exceptional relic of vintage Americana.

The highly complex gaming mechanism in the lower portion of the scale gives the player the opportunity to win their penny back and receive their weight for free. To play, one must swing a small golf club at the penny with a quick turn of the knob. If the penny soars over the lake, past several obstacles, and into the hole, the coin rings a bell on the way to the return cup at the bottom of the scale. If not, the penny falls into the lake and into the operator's cash box inside.

These weight scales were the first of their kind to offer the user a service rather than a prize, allowing the average American the chance to monitor their health and weight without visiting a doctor. In fact, a study conducted in 1937 by the U.S. Department of Commerce concluded that “Penny scales were the principle means of over 130,000,000 people keeping in touch with their weight and health.” During their height of popularity, these scales brought in an estimated $100 million dollars annually for retailers across the country (over $1.5 billion by current standards), and today, they are touted as being "America's First Vending Service."
