description
This immensely rare art glass vase by Émile Gallé was created for and exhibited at the great Paris Exhibition Universelle of 1900. Entirely hand-crafted, the exquisite piece is a testament to Gallé's mastery of this delicate art form, particularly his glass marquetry technique. Patented by the famed artist in 1898, marqueterie de verres ou cristaux requires pieces of hot colored glass are embedded into molten glass to create an inlay effect that can be further finished with etching, cutting and polishing.

A critic once wrote of Gallé's technique, "The process presents the glassmaker with a great intellectual challenge...transforming him into an artist, decorator, colorist, and landscapist." At the 1900 Exposition Universelle, an adoring public raved of Gallé's incredible new marquetry designs.

Considered one of the pioneers of Art Nouveau, Gallé was renowned for his naturalistic glass artistry. His revolutionary designs and colors caused an immediate sensation at the great international exhibitions, including the 1889 Paris International Exposition and the legendary Exhibition Universelle of 1900. Today works by Gallé are highly collectible and increasingly scarce, particularly those with an exhibition history.
