description
This beautiful 19th-century English silverplate biscuit box is the work of James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield. Formed in an exquisite seashell motif, the box opens to reveal two gold-washed compartments to hold one's favorite baked treats. Though most may think of a biscuit as the soft, flaky baked good, British biscuits resemble cookies and crackers that can be either sweet or savory. These biscuits are a common accompaniment to a traditional tea. Today, biscuit boxes are highly collectible, with fine specimens such as this becoming quite difficult to acquire.

Bears the mark of James Dixon & Sons with the indicator "EP" for electroplated wares and the company's "bugle" mark used on wares after 1879; numbered "5207"
