description
This rare pair of English side cabinets captures the luxury of the Regency era in grand style. Crafted of rich mahogany cross-banded in rosewood, the cabinets embody the Neoclassical style that pervaded English design in the early 19th century. Their beautifully proportioned forms evoke the stately silhouettes of ancient Greek and Roman architecture, and each is expertly carved with charming rosettes and elaborate Corinthian columns. The gilded pulls are also drawn from antiquity, taking the shape of lion's heads and providing the perfect contrast to the richness of the wood.

The magnificent pair is crafted after a very similar cabinet, which was a special commission by the famed English novelist William Beckford for his house in Lansdown Crescent. Designed by the architect Henry Goodridge, the spectacular folly became known as Beckford's Tower. Beckford, a compulsive collector, housed his extensive collection there, and most of it remains on view there to this day, the cabinet included. This pair, with its more detailed carving and elaborate ornamentation, is perhaps even more impressive than Beckford's example. Together, they represent a triumph of Regency-period cabinetmaking.
