Eavesdropping

Signed “VReggianini” (lower right)
Oil on canvas

An array of silks and satins are on display in this meticulously rendered genre painting by Vittorio Reggianini. The famed 19th-century Italian artist is known for his skill in depicting charming scenes of bourgeois life. Entitled Eavesdropping, this painting exemplifies his distinctive style, boasting an almost photographic realism in its execution. Beloved for his lustrous treatment of fabric and dynamic textures, Reggianini’s romantic scenes are an enduring favorite among collectors.

Painting in the midst of military conflicts and turmoil during the late 19th century, Reggianini sought to revive the leisurely elegance of a bygone era in his canvases. In this example, two young beauties surreptitiously lean in to listen to an unseen conversation on the other side of the curtain. The gleaming folds of the ladies’ satin gowns appear smooth to the touch, and one can almost feel the coolness of the marble wall behind them. Reggianini was arguably the most famous and accomplished painter of this genre, referred to as the “Silk and Satins School” of the Costume painters.

Born in Modena, Italy, Reggianini studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Modena, where he later became a professor. In 1900, he took part in the Alinari Concorso of Florence. Reggianini also exhibited with the Florentine Art Association in 1907-1908 and again in 1910-1911. He was associated with the leading Florentine genre painters of the period, including Federico Andreotti and Francesco Vinea. Like his contemporaries, Reggianini executed a variety of costume pieces of the bourgeoisie enjoying the arts. He combined fantasy with reality, sensuality with sensibility and, above all, infused his compositions with an aura of luxury and sophistication.
