description
An incredible example of 18th-century Dutch clockmaking, this marvelous tall case clock (also known as a longcase or grandfather clock) was crafted by Jonah Smit of Amsterdam. The late Baroque-style case is exemplary of those clocks commissioned specifically by the upper class, featuring luxurious timbers and mechanical features that were seldom seen in timepieces of this period.

The entire clock case is crafted of burl walnut with exquisite marquetry detailing of the highest order. The timepiece is powered by an 8-day Dutch striking movement, with indicators on the face for the day, date and month. This particular clock is set apart by the inclusion of a rare “scheepjes mechaniek”, or automaton ship mechanism. The automaton brings to life five ships as they traverse the rough waves in the waterway. Possessing the very finest attributes of the Dutch clockmaker's art, it is among the finest of the Dutch longcase clocks made during the 18th century.

The first Dutch longcase clocks, developed in the latter half of the 17th century, were typically copies of English clocks. It wasn't long before innovative Dutch clockmakers began introducing their own features...features that would become national characteristics, setting the clocks from Amsterdam and other Dutch centers far and apart from their European counterparts. The rare and complex technique of Dutch striking, when a clock strikes out the hours in full at the half-hour on a high bell and at the hour on a lower bell, was one such uniquely Dutch feature. Clocks from the Netherlands were also incredibly functional in their complexity and included indicators not only for hours and minutes, but days, dates and months.
