Deauville Seascape

Signed “F. Gall” (lower left)
Oil on canvas

This luminous composition by Hungarian painter François Gall beautifully captures society families at leisure on the beaches of Deauville, a seaside resort on the Côte Fleurie of France’s Normandy region. Gall’s masterful technique, rich with swift and short brushstrokes of subtle color, reveals the lasting influence of the great French painter Eugène Boudin. Regarded by many as the father of Impressionism, Boudin's groundbreaking plein air painting influenced generations of artists who followed him, including Gall. Entitled Deauville Seascape, this painting showcases the painter's revolutionary use of light and expressive brushstrokes that are rooted in his Impressionist lineage.

Born in Kolozsvar, Hungary (modern-day Transylvania), Gall began his artistic training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. In the 1940s, he firmly established himself in Paris as a painter of renown in the Impressionist tradition, and his style was particularly indebted to Eugène Boudin and the early work of Claude Monet. He was honored in 1963 as a recipient of the Francis Smith Prize and enjoyed remarkable success during his lifetime.
